Science

February 19th 2019

Today in science we tried to extract the DNA from kiwi fruits.

Method:

  • Chill ethanol by placing in a freezer for at least 2 hours, or overnight. Keep it on ice throughout the procedure.
  • Make thick 'soup' by blending your source material with a little cold water and a pinch of table salt, blend for 15 seconds.
  • Strain your 'soup' through a mesh strainer and collect the liquid part in a beaker.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of washing-up liquid and swirl to mix.
  • Pour the mixture into a test tube.
  • Let the mixture settle for 5-10 minutes, some recommend putting the mixture into a water bath with warm water.
  • Pour the chilled ethanol and watch the DNA appear.
